Granites Country (Purlkiji)
This art work talks about the country around the Granites or Purlkiji. The possum went around creating the landscape. He made the trees, grass, rocks hills and large stones you see in the area. Janganpa (possum) asked to go through men’s initiation ceremony. They said no and go away, so he went east and came back with 2 other tribes’ men. They had a fight there at the Purlkiji and won killing everyone. Janganpa took the country. The other people carried on to the place where Janganpa first came from, in the west and settled there. So then there were Western and Eastern Jangangpa, and all the lands in the area were created. This work represents the rocks or hills in the area of Granites, and the trees, and grass. So now the name for the mine site Granites is Janganpa Purlkiji.
