Fire Dreaming

This dreaming tells about fire from our country. Men use fire to hunt for animals. Two men Jakamarra and Jupurrurla went hunting for food and started making fire at Marlungurru.  This is a place in Warlpiri lands west of the Stuart Highway. With their fire making equipment they made fire.  As they grinded their stones sparks and fire just went everywhere.

The fire burnt all the way to Duck Ponds to the north and formed Milpirri clouds, which can make rain.    The men hunted there.

About Henry Jakamarra Cook

Henry Jakamarra Cook - or his proper name Henry Bird Anderson Cooke Jakamarra is an older gentleman now and enjoys relaxing in the art centre painting for sale. He was given his English name by Bob Hunterdale a long time ago at Mt Doreen, while still a young man or child. Another name he was given is Dennis by Bill Bradley at McHunty Outstation in Mt Doreen area. He can't see well, but in spite of this and his age has painted a number of wonderful works and has found the end result pleasing and so is continuing to paint. He also loves sitting with his friends making wooden artefacts at the art centre. Jakamarra was born in the desert but has travelled on foot through the Tanami. He also travelled extensively as a stockman on horse back to WA, NSW and Victoria. Now he looks forward to a trip 300kms south to his country Yartulu Yartulu, the Granites Gold Mines, in the Tanami.
