Lisa Martin, skin name Nungarrayi, was born and raised in Yuendumu, a Warlpiri community in the Tanami Desert, approximately 600kms south of Lajamanu.

Nungarrayi began painting at a young age in Yuendumu, learning the stories of her family’s traditional Dreamings (Jukurrpa). She was an artist with Warlukurlangu, in Yuendumu, and at Nyirripi, both Warlpiri communities in the Tanami.

Relocating to Lajamanu as an adult, Nungarrayi became a staff member of the Warnayaka Art Centre, where she also continued to paint her Jukurrpa.

Nungarrayi was only able to paint sporadically as she was the mother to four young daughters.
